Chief Daniel Blue Horse, a leader of the Oglala Sioux, had fought under Crazy Horse at the Battle of Little Big Horn at age 15. He was chief of the Sioux band from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation which adopted Miller into the tribe in 1939. He died in 1940 at age 79.

"We did this war making to save our buffalo herds as much as we could for ourselves. For the same reason we had to fight Wasicuns when they came into our country to hunt buffalo or try to round us up to keep us on the reservations. We had to have the food we had always know.- buffalo meat."
